NBISIING SECONDARY SCHOOL

The Nbisiing Secondary School is a provincially inspected private secondary school offering a wide variety of high school courses with an emphasis on the needs and aspirations of First Nations’ students.

We offer a wide range of secondary school courses leading to a provincial secondary school diploma. Our small class size coupled with our emphasis on academic excellence and aboriginal pride gives students the skills to succeed.

On January 10th, 2000, the students and staff of Nbisiing Secondary School moved into a new $3.3 million Education and Community Complex on Nipissing First Nation.

Our new school is proud to offer:

• a library/resource center possessing a wide variety of First Nation’s books, videos and materials
• the latest in computer technology and hardware
• all classrooms connected to the Internet
• a fully functional science laboratory
• a full-size gymnasium
• weight room equipment including cardiovascular equipment and universal weights
• a comfortable student lounge

At Nbisiing Secondary School, our staff will strive to ensure that every student will be provided with:

• an understanding for the historical and cultural aspects of their First Nation’s ancestry
• an educational program that will meet the individual’s learning needs
• opportunities to acquire the communication, social, financial and employment skills necessary for success in life
• a school environment where students will realize and excel at their full potential

The establishment of the “Spirit Creations” brand by Nbisiing Secondary School was assisted through previous funding by the ministry. Now this secondary school, located on Nipissing First Nation, will expand and strengthen its unique business model, which was designed to spark the entrepreneurial spirit of Aboriginal youth, all while incorporating vital cultural components. The “Spirit Creations” project will grow this entrepreneurial school/community-based program in which Aboriginal youth participate in a range of entrepreneurial activities, including camps, trade fairs and cultural events, and the development of viable hospitality and tourism ventures in their community.

Project starts: March 2009 / Project ends: March 2010
